I thought the page describing observation was very accurate. I just recently started my Internship and the first couple weeks have been "observation" weeks. I have already been put through 3 of the 4 steps to observing. I am working on sound engineering at a music hall and my final step consists of me actually being on stage with the band to listen to the music being mixed and find things I am doing wrong and learn how to correct them for the musicians (undercover agent step) By me physically doing something for a band automatically crosses the line of "observation"? Undercover Agent requires interaction. That is the only step that I do not believe is 100% accurate.
